THE family of a man who is fighting for his life in hospital following an unprovoked attack, have appealed for witnesses to come forward.

Iain Eldridge is still in a critical condition with a severe head injury after being assaulted whilst out celebrating New Year’s with his girlfriend in Bawtry.

The 35-year-old man from Auckley was with his partner outside a hairdressers shop in Station Road, when he was approached by an unknown man who then assaulted him.

The attacker fled from the incident which happened near to the Penny Farthing pub just after midnight on New Year’s Day, police said.

Mr Eldridge was taken to Doncaster Royal Infirmary and later transferred to the Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield.

In a statement, his family said: “Iain is an ordinary, honest, hardworking family man. He was just out enjoying New Year’s Eve when he was attacked for no reason.

“It could have happened to your son, husband or your father. Someone must know who did this and shouldn’t be protecting them. We just want to know who did this and why.”

Detectives are looking for the attacker who is white, of a stocky build and in his late 20s to early 30s with short, blond hair.

Anybody who witnessed the attack should call police on 101 quoting incident number 87 of Sunday, January 1, 2012.
