RISING star Josh Dever from Doncaster is hopelessly devoted to the stage - and he’s making his professional debut at the Sheffield Lyceum next week.
The 23-year-old is starring as slick-haired, rock ‘n’ rolling T Bird Sonny in the ultimate feel-good musical, Grease, from May 14 to 19.
We asked the former Denaby Main Primary School pupil to tell us more, tell us more about the show and why it was the one that he wanted.
He said: “I wasn’t really expecting to get a part so when I did I was absolutely bouncing off the walls. It’s a fantastic cast - they’re a really good team to work with and I feel like they’re an extended family for me while we’re away on tour.”
Josh, who graduated from the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts in London, has already taken the show to Bristol, Cardiff, Edinburgh and Ireland. He has previously taken on roles as Tony in West Side Story and Petruchio in Taming of The Shrew.
Josh has always loved to act, with some of his early work being impersonations to family and friends. He says he’s still not given them up and can still ‘do’ a pretty good job of Robert de Niro and Michael Buble impressions.
He added: “When I was younger, I wasn’t sure whether I wanted to go into acting or become an athlete. I really enjoyed athletics and was quite keen on decathlons. I still keep fit now and the show is really energetic but I do have to be careful not to get injured.
“But at 17, I decided to go to Rotherham College to study acting. My friends and family were really supportive and I got accepted into a three-year course in London.”
Audiences across the country have been electrified by Grease’s first tour away from the West End in five years.
Josh added: “I can’t wait to come and perform in Sheffield.
“I hope that the audience will be as good as I expect!
“It’s fantastic when audiences react and get involved with the show.”
Also starring in Grease is X Factor’s Rhydian Roberts with Danny Bayne - winner of ITV’s Grease is the Word - as cool kid Danny, along with Carina Gillespie as his preppy sweetheart Sandy.
