families are being urged to get their thinking caps on for a fundraising quiz in aid of a project to restore old copies of the Epworth Bells.

Volunteers at Epworth Mechanics’ Institute Library have launched the quiz as part of a fundraising appeal to preserve copies of the paper, which date back to 1872, as historical documents.

The group has been awarded a £6,300 grant from North Lincolnshire Council, but it must also raise £700 towards the project.

Volunteers are looking for people to pay £1 to complete a quiz sheet over the festive season, with the winner taking home a prize of £20.

Proceeds will help to pay for restoration work, which includes the binding of the hundreds of copies.

Library secretary Chris Pledger, 56, of Sandtoft Road, Belton, said: “There are 100 questions on the quiz sheet and each answer has a theme of sweets.

“It will be a fun activity for all the family to do over Christmas.

“Residents will also be supporting a great cause, which will benefit the whole community. Anyone who would like a copy can drop into the institute on Market Place.”

All quiz sheets must be handed back to the institute before the volunteers’ annual general meeting on February 19.
