Great British Bake Off winner, Nancy Birtwhistle, made a guest appearance talking about her journey on the popular TV show in aid of a charity close to her heart.

Nancy from Barton spoke to over 100 people at Elsham Golf Club and helped to raise £1,200 for Lindsey Lodge Hospice on Burringham Road in Scunthorpe.

The hospice provides support and end of life care for patients and families’ living with terminal illnesses and the baker has first-hand experience with visiting loved ones there.

Nancy said: “I support Lindsey Lodge because it receives little funding therefore it’s important everyone gets behind it to keep the vital service running. The support and care they give is fantastic as I have experienced.

“It’s a local charity for local people and I feel like I can make a difference from events like this one by making an appearance and raising much-needed funds.

“The talk went down really well as I spoke about my Bake Off experiences, a little bit about myself, the process of the programme and how it affects your life afterwards.”

Nancy recently supported the hospice by judging homemade baking at Brocklesby Country Fair and this helped to raise £870.

She added: “I love food which is an important part of it, especially well flavoured food, and I love to show people how to bake because it’s so simple!

“I’ve been super busy and shortly I’ll be going on a Fred Olsen cruise ship to do food demonstrations, from October I’ve got Good Food TV shows lined up, a lot of private events to attend and a wedding cake to make!”

Organiser of the fundraiser, Linda Jaggs-Fowler from Barton supporter group, added: “It’s fantastic that Nancy supports us like this and the event proved very popular as tickets sold out very quickly – we even had a waiting list!

“It’s a great way of having fun and raising money for a worthy, local cause at the same time. Last year our group of 10 supporters raised £18,500 for Lindsey Lodge Hospice so we hope to raise just as much this year… if not even more!”
