A community is rallying to support a fundraising campaign for the family of a schoolboy who died along with his dad in a horror car crash.

Jamie West, aged 15, of Arnold Crescent, Mexborough, and dad Stephen Ramsell, 37, of Church Lane, Bentley, died after a silver Subaru Impreza in which they were travelling hit a wall and road sign on Cusworth Lane, near Cusworth Hall, nearly three weeks ago.

An online fundraising page has been launched in honour of Jamie, while former classmates at Mexborough School are also raising money to help the family with funeral costs. So far about £440 had been raised towards a £600 target.

More than a dozen tributes have been posted on the Go Get Funding website.

Sean Gibbons, 40, of Park Road, Mexborough, said: “So sad to hear about your tragic loss. Love and thoughts are with family and friends.”

Anne Riley added: “Our hearts go out to all your family at this deeply sad time.”

Mexborough School students have created wristbands in Jamie’s memory and plan to sell them to help raise funds. Youngsters have also been offered counselling.

Headteacher Wayne Parkes said: “This is really difficult for our students to deal with. But we are offering support through counselling, and the fact they are raising money for the family shows how admirably they are dealing with this awful tragedy.”

Coroner Fred Curtis opened an inquest yesterday which is set to resume in February next year. Jamie’s body was released to the family for funeral arrangements to be made, but Mr Ramsell’s will remain with the coroner’s office to undergo further tests.

Sergeant Andy Noble said police were still trying to establish who was driving at the time of the crash at 1.20am on August 29, as there were multiple occupants in the car.

One man was questioned but no arrests have been made.
