The pair are the only weekly newspaper reporters to be nominated in the categories also open to daily newspaper journalists as well as broadcast media.

Kate, 26, was shortlisted for a string of exclusives including an ‘ugly’ dog who was struggling to be re-homed and a disabled train passenger who was told to travel to another county to catch the train back to Doncaster.

Among 29-year-old Paul’s entries was an exclusive on why Olympic hopeful Molly Grayson may have to give up swimming. His thought-provoking and colourful coverage of Doncaster Rovers also impressed the judges.

Kate has previously won the Young Journalist of the Year (weekly) category in last year’s O2 awards, and was Yorkshire Feature Writer of the Year (weekly) in the 2008 Yorkshire Press Awards. .

Paul was nominated for Sports Reporter of the Year at the Yorkshire Press Awards 2009.

Winners will be announced on July 14.
