A free fireworks display will be held for the thousands of people attended Doncaster Racecourse and HallamFM’s event at the weekend - and were left bitterly disappointed.

Doncaster Racecourse was all set to play host to HallamFMs fireworks extravaganza as part of the radio station’s 40 year celebration on Saturday, but the display was stopped shortly after it had begun - with organisers saying this due to the weather.

However, many were quick to take to social media to express their disappointment, and concerns that the display was not safe.

Jody Richardson said: “It wasn’t the wind that was the problem, the fireworks were far too close to the spectators to begin with. We were at the picnic tables by the railing and were showered in burning debris.

All three of us were hit by burning pieces, including our five year old son. I had to lean over him to protect him from the burning pieces and was hit on the shoulder, my husband was hit in the eye.”

Responding to the public concerns, Mark Spincer, Managing Director of Doncaster Racecourse said: “We take public safety very seriously and all partners involved in the firework display decided that based on advice from the Fuse health and safety team who were monitoring safety in the crowds, that the fireworks would have to be abandoned.

“Fuse Fireworks had in place a full risk assessment and operated completely within the British Pyrotechnists Association guidelines. Unfortunately, the gusting winds could not have been predicted. We realise that this is very disappointing for our customers.”

People need to pre-register for the ticket free event by visiting www.doncaster-racecourse.co.uk and bring the booking confirmation on the night. Customers who purchased tickets for last weekend from Doncaster racecourse or Hallam FM will receive a letter or email from the event partner they booked with.

The event this Saturday will include a children’s fairground area which will be extended to the Hallam FM Champagne Lawn. Rides will be priced at £1 between 6pm and 7pm.

Gates open at 6pm, with a children’s disco and entertainment in the exhibition hall until 7.15pm, followed by full fireworks display itself at approximately 7.30pm.

Following the display live music will take place within the exhibition, with bars open until 9pm.

Additional free car parking will be available on the night.

Access to this event will be through County, Grandstand and Family entrances.
