TWO junior football teams came together to hold a memorial match in honour of a former player who died in a car crash.

Nicholas Collins, 18, died from injuries sustained in a crash when the Vauxhall Vectra car he was a front seat passenger in, left the road back in April 2008.

To honour the memory of the popular Hatfield teenager, his old football club Dunscroft Welfare played Stainforth FC in an under-11s encounter.

The occasion saw Dunscroft run out 4-1 winners overall to pick up the trophy named after Nicholas who was well-known as ‘Nico’.

The event was also a chance to raise funds for Nicholas’ family who came along to the match held at the Dunscroft Welfare pitch, off Broadway.

The boys managed to raise £85 from a raffle which will go towards Nicholas’ peace garden placed at his Doncaster home. It is hoped the match will be an annual event.
