A big hearted and courageous carer, who mixes gymnastics with looking after her disabled mother, was rewarded for her selfless devotion.

Super kid, Ella Shackleton, 13, deservedly won the Doncaster Knights sponsored Young Citizen of the Year Award presented by its community rugby and mini juniors manager, Lisa Davies .

Ella is a national champion in acrobatic gymnastics and so she knows just exactly what is required to be flexible, but she was praised at the Super Kids awards for the ability to take that flexibility to another level.

The super daughter balances her sporting success and commitment with her daily school work and care for her mum alongside her dad.

Since undergoing spinal fusion surgery Ella’s mum has found it very difficult to get out of bed, but this has not stopped the plucky teenager making a commitment to her mother and also making fantastic progress in her gymnastics and excelling with her schooling.

Ella said: “I feel quite stunned to have won this award, it’s quite a surprise. I’m not the sort of person who normally gets nominated, it’s a shock.”
