A NUMBER of roads were closed across the Dearne Valley this morning due to flooding.
Motorists faced long delays on Aldwarke Road, Rawmarsh, and Wentworth Road, Kilnhurst due to excess standing water.
There were also reports of closures on Kilnhurst Road and Hooton Road in Kilnhurst.
The Environment Agency has now placed flood alerts on rivers including the Don amid fears the area’s waterways could burst their banks if the downpour continues.
Weather forecasters predict the heavy rain will continue until the middle of May, but experts say a below average level of rainfall over the last two years means that the severe floods experienced in South Yorkshire in June 2007 are unlikely to be repeated.
A MeteoGroup weather forecaster said to expect light and patchy rain for most of today and tomorrow.
But on Sunday a heavy band of rain is expected across South Yorkshire for most of the afternoon and into Monday.
