Fire crews have spent the night tackling a huge haystack blaze in Doncaster.

Five hundred bales of hay were destroyed at Adwick Grange Farm, Woodlands after flames broke out shortly before 8pm last night.

Crews from Doncaster and Adwick attended the scene on Doncaster Road and let the fire burn out naturally in its own time rather than use water to put it out.

Officers worked with farm staff to separate the bales as strong winds fanning the flames were causing it to spread.

No one was injured in the incident, although one firefighter was hit by a bale of hay during the operation, which lasted until 4am.

Crews are expected to revisit the scene later today.

A fire service spokesman said the cause of the fire was still being investigated but was thought to be deliberate.
