five years ago Nick and Debra Middleton bought a property with land in Crowle, and launched their unique family farming business.
Nick, 48, a former managing director of a Dearne Valley plastics company, decided to work part-time and raise Aberdeen Angus cattle after the birth of his daughter. The family are thrilled at the success of their venture, that is building steadily despite the poor economic climate.
Nick said: “We have control of the process from growing the feed, to delivering the meat to people’s doors. There are no middle-men which means we can sell premium beef for much less than the average UK price.”
Debra, 43, had no experience of farming, but loves their new life. Sons Adam, 19, and Ben, 16, have also taken to it although Adam is at university, and even three-year old Holly plays a part - her favourite task being feeding the calves.
“We get a bit too close to calves at times and when that happens they don’t go in to the beef business,” said Debra. “Our cattle are primarily grass fed and combined with a 28-day hanging period I think that’s what gives our meat its flavour and tenderness.” She added: “The feedback we get is fantastic, so we must be doing something right.”
