Platform shoes for men, the Sony Walkman and early record players, these are some of the many items that will be on display in a new exhibition starting on Saturday.
‘The Latest Thing’ brings together a wide range of different objects from the collection of Doncaster Museum Service, all of which were once considered to be cutting edge examples of technology or style and will be on display at Cusworth Hall.
Some of the objects might be familiar but others like the Comptometer, which was invented at the end of the 19th century to enable complex mathematical calculations to be carried out at speed, are not so well known.
The exhibition also includes examples of some of the earliest mobile phones from the 1980s and onwards.
Coun Bob Johnson, portfolio holder for Regeneration and growth, tourism, veteran’s champion and culture and leisure said: “Seen together, the objects in ‘The Latest Thing’, show how quickly the world moves on, and how the fashionable items which we own today can rapidly become the museum pieces of tomorrow.”
The exhibition will run at the borough-based site until September 15.
