Residents are being urged to join in a major clean up operation of a Dearne waterway which has become strewn with litter.

The Canal & River Trust are teaming up with the Mexborough First political party to clear the towpath at the side of the South Yorkshire Navigation canal.

They will be concentrating on the area close to the railway bridge on Station Road, Mexborough.

Volunteers are urged to meet at the site on Saturday November 22,from 10am and the work will continue until about 3pm.

A spokesman for the Canal & River Trust said: “This is a lovely stretch of canal, teaming with wildlife, but unfortunately teaming with litter as well.

“With the support of Mexborough First and the local community we’d like to transform the waterways through the town to make them a safe and enjoyable place to visit.

“The towpath is already well used and is an asset to the community of Mexborough so please join us and help us to keep it that way.

“This is a great way to socialise, meet new people, and to meet others with Mexborough’s best interest at heart.”

Volunteers are encouraged to wear outdoor clothing and sturdy footwear as the ground is likely to be wet and muddy.
