ELECTIONS 2015: Doncaster goes to the polls

As the country goes to the polls today, the Free Press is encouraging you, our readers, to go out and vote and make sure your voice is heard.

Today, Doncaster voters are set to select the town’s three MPs, 55 borough councillors and 55 parish and town councillors.

In one of the closest general elections of recent times we are calling on the hundreds of thousands of people registered to vote in Doncaster, to head to your polling station and have your say.

Jo Miller, Chief Executive at Doncaster council and Returning Officer is backing us in our call to voters.

She said: “Today is a big day and it’s important you use your vote.

“These elections will affect all of our lives at a national, borough and parish level and this is your chance to have your say.

“There are 173 polling stations open from 7am to 10pm where you can vote and drop off your postal vote and don’t worry if it’s your first time as the polling station staff will be happy to help.”

While much of the focus may be on today’s general election, which could lead to Labour leader and Doncaster North candidate, Ed Miliband, becoming Prime Minister, 2015 also marks a landmark year for local elections in Doncaster.

Due to boundary changes that came into force this year, resulting in the number of borough councillors being reduced from 63 to 55, all of the borough’s council seats across the 21 wards will be up for election for the first time ever.

The elected candidates will have a two year term that will until the next Mayoral election in 2017.

Candidates will then stand again in 2017 with the term lasting four years, the same as the elected mayor.

And in the parish council elections, all 55 seats are also up for election - 32 of which are uncontested.

In all cases, parish and town councillors will have a six year term of office.

A total of 173 polling stations across the borough will be open between 7am and 10pm today.

Your designated polling station will be clearly stated on your polling card.

Out of the 61,000 people across the borough issued with a postal vote, a total of 39,941 constituents had already returned their vote as the Free Press went to press.

The General Election count is due to get underway after 10pm tonight, when the polling stations close, with results expected between 4am and 6am.

Local election votes will be counted tomorrow (Friday, May 8) from 2pm with the first results expected to be announced after 3pm.

Meanwhile, votes for the parish council elections will be counted from 11am on Saturday morning.
