Plans have been drawn up to bring a new school to Doncaster which aims to revolutionise education in the borough.

Proposals are on the table for a university technical college and business leaders have now been given details of the scheme.

Commerce chiefs and key stakeholders met for a presentation by Doncaster Chamber where representatives from the Doncaster University Technical College campaign outlined details of the project.

UTCs are schools for 14- to18-year-olds specialising in the delivery of science, technology, engineering and maths. The purpose of UTCs is to develop the advanced technical skills required to ensure that the UK prospers in the 21st century.

And Doncaster Chamber, along with other partners such as Doncaster College and Doncaster Council, is spearheading the campaign to bring a UTC to Doncaster.

The college will work very closely with local businesses and partners to effectively develop the next generation of engineers and technicians, giving them the right skills, knowledge and experience to fulfil their potential and prepare them for the world of work.

Dan Fell, chief executive of Doncaster Chamber said: “The UTC will support the education, training and vocational development of young people in sectors that are pivotal to the future of Doncaster’s economy.

“These include rail, engineering and manufacturing.

“All of these sectors are, already, key contributors to Doncaster’s economy; however, businesses in all of these sectors are also reporting skills gaps and an aging workforce – issues that are constraining their growth potential.”

The UTC will help generate a supply chain of ambitious young people into these sectors and consequently help ensure that Doncaster has the talent it needs to maintain and develop more world-class businesses in these sectors.

He added: “A visible and successful UTC will help raise aspirations in our young people and highlight the exciting related careers available to them in and around Doncaster.”

The Chamber is keen to see the UTC located in the town centre and is also encouraging its partners to take a similar view, to support the development of an increasingly dynamic and vibrant centre.
