A Dearne school was the only one mapped across the borough to be celebrating Earth Day this year.

Earth Day on April 23 celebrated its 50 anniversary with an adopted theme of tree planting.

In light of this, and because trees absorb harmful gases in our atmosphere so creating a healthier environment and promoting a sustainable future for everyone, staff at Goldthorpe Primary school decided to join in the global effort and do something positive for their environment.

A spokesman for Goldthorpe Primary School said: “Schools and community groups across the world have been planting trees and we wanted to be part of this environmental movement.

“With that in mind we created our Plant Your Future event, which involved year three pupils each planting a tree to mark the occasion. According to the earth day map we were the only Barnsley school to carry out an event.”
