PUPILS at West Butterwick Church of England Primary School led a recent community worship service at St Mary’s Church.

Head teacher Jo Buckle explained the school has developed a ‘Lighting the Candle Group’ after children were asked if they would like to get involved in planning and delivering regular church services.

Youngsters organised music, hymns, prayers and scripts as well as putting together questions to ask the congregation.

“The children have always played an active role in our worships in church,” Mrs Buckle added.

“However, this ‘Lighting the Candle Group’ has taken it a stage further with the children themselves thinking through and planning the service in its entirety.”

“It was the first time that the pupils themselves had planned and delivered their own service to the local community.”

The theme of the service was ‘Who Do You Follow?’ and children told the story of Zacchaeus.

Families attended the event along with school governors, parish councillors and local business people.

The school’s next community worship at St Mary’s will be on Friday, January 20.

“We look forward to seeing this develop over the coming months,” Mrs Buckle added.
