TWO primary schools could merge by January under new council proposals.

Doncaster Council is currently looking into the benefits of merging Adwick Washington Infants School and Adwick Park Junior School, which could see the two come together by January next year.

Councillors have agreed to consult on the two schools and create one education centre for three to 11 year olds, in a bid to improve standards for children across Adwick.

Councillor Eric Tatton-Kelly presented a report on the merger to Doncaster Council’s cabinet.

In it he said the reasoning behind the move was to offer a more consistent education for the children of Adwick, as Adwick Washington is graded as a good school by Ofsted, where as Adwick Park Junior School went back into special measures two months ago.

It is suggested the new headteacher of Adwick Washington School would take charge of the unified school.

At a cabinet meeting Adwick councillor John Mounsey said: “We have to provide first class education for children.

“Adwick Park Junior School has been in special measures twice in four years and it is what is best for the children that is important and nothing else.”
