Mexborough pupils to explore big theories at the Large Hadron Collider

Students are in for a field trip with a difference this weekend - for they are travelling into Europe to discover more about how the Universe was created!

A group of 20 Year 11 pupils from Mexborough School are travelling to Switzerland to visit CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, where they will learn more about the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).

The youngsters will spend all weekend at the facility and discover how scientists are using the LHC to learn more about how our Universe is being formed.

Pupils will be given an underground tour of the LHC, a tunnel-like formation which runs for 17 miles about 500 feet under the surface.

They will also get to see two exhibitions which explain more about CERN’s main missions and explore the mysteries of the Universe.

Karl Harrer, 26, a science teacher at the school who is leading the trip, said: “The aim of the visit is to learn more about the world of particle physics and boost students’ interest as well as show that the science industry is a viable career for many aspiring young scientists.

“Students seem to view science as just a lesson they have to attend and when they think of a science career they imagine a nerdy old man in a lab who has grey hair messing about with chemicals, when in fact to work in science you have to be dynamic, creative and have a natural curiosity.

“This trip will show these people at work so hopefully inspire some of them to have a career in science. The whole trip fits in with the curriculum because students will be taught the fundamentals of particle physics including their properties.”
