Students showed off their science skills and harnessed wind power during a special day at school.

Youngsters who attend Danum Academy took part in a STEM – Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics – day.

All nine forms in Year 7 of the Armthorpe Road school took part in the challenge to design and build a wind turbine.

Pupils, under the guidance of their form tutors and with the assistance of Year 11, 12 and 13 engineering students, worked in teams to produce a turbine.

A spokesman said: “The turbine that produced the most power from each tutor group was put forward for the final in the afternoon.

“The finalists had to give a presentation about their turbine and how they had worked as a group to produce solutions to the problems.

“The overall winners of the challenge were 7F, with 7I coming second and 7A coming third.”

The spokesman added: “Well done to all staff and pupils involved in the event.”
