Getting down and dirty in a forest may not be everyone’s idea of a good time, but it certainly appealed to eight Year 10 students recently when they volunteered to take part in the annual Wates’ Challenge.

Wates is the company that is currently building the new academy and each year they organise a day of team challenges giving an opportunity for their own staff to work alongside staff and students from the schools they are building. The day began for the eight eager students with bacon butties at Camp Hill near Ripon where 5 schools were waiting for the fun to begin.

Wates staff joined the teams and soon everyone was zooming around the quad bike course or zorbing, which involves getting inside a giant inflatable ball and attempting to race across water.

Other activities included building a giant tower out of crates, scaling huge climbing walls and working with nuclear fuel rods!

The day culminated with egg and spoon, wheelbarrow and sack racing, with egg throwing as the grand finale.
