two Doncaster dance acts are sashaying their way onto the shortlist of a hit TV talent show after wowing judges with ground breaking performances.
Urban Jokers made up of Sia Lord, 20, and Pierre Lafayette, 23, and 19-year-old solo act Mark Gauden aka the Gingerbread Man - are both now in with a shot of competing for a £250,000 prize in Got To Dance.
Hip-hop dance duo Urban Jokers, who received gold stars from all three judges, are no stranger to talent competitions after making it to the semi finals of BBC3 show Move Like Michael Jackson and appearing on Channel 4’s Street Dance XXL.
Sia, of Broomvale Walk, New Edlington, said: “We have seen the show and always wanted to take part but we have had other TV commitments so when we got the chance this year we jumped at it.
“We went into it with no expectations but to get such good feedback from industry professionals was amazing it was like a breath of fresh air.
“We want people in Doncaster to get behind us and support us.”
The pair, who both teach dance, met five years ago at a dance competition.
Sia said: “Me and Pierre just ended up being in the circle dancing at the same time at a competition then about two weeks later I was at Doncaster train station and I saw Pierre and we realised we were both from Doncaster. We had no idea.
“We found a studio in Doncaster and have been dancing together ever since.”
Meanwhile, 19-year-old Hip hop and brake dancer Mark from Wallbank Road, Armthorpe, is hoping it will be second time lucky for him.
The dancer had put himself forward as a contestant last year and despite impressing judges he failed to make the shortlist.
“I was more confident this time because I had already tried it. But the nerves did not help me and I was just as nervous as I was last time.
“I had planned myself a routine. But on the day I didn’t want anything to go wrong, so I dropped the routine and just freestyled it.
“The judges were impressed – they really like it and they gave me three gold stars to get me onto the shortlist.”
Both dance acts now face an anxious wait to find out if they will make it through to the next round. Got To Dance is on Sundays at 6pm on Sky One.
