In a nationwide poll, Doncaster has come out in the top three of the most working class places in Britain - narrowly pipped to the title by Barrow-in-Furness which took the top spot and Crewe in second.

Tony Martin, chairman of locallife.co.uk which commissioned the poll, said: "The criteria we chose were just meant to give a general overall impression."

The list was collated taking into account the population, the number of chip shops, working men's clubs, bookies and the average price of a pint.
