A former star of Britain’s Got Talent has died, family members have revealed.

Doncaster duo John Neill and granddaughter Sallie Lax wowed TV judges as 2 Grand when they reached the finals of the hit show in 2009.

Mr Neill had been suffering from cancer and a statement on the duo’s Facebook site confirmed he had died at 7.10pm yesterday evening, Saturday, September 6.

The statement said: “It is with great sadness I must write that Granddad John the nations favourite granddad passed away this evening at 7.10pm.

“He was a great man, loving father, granddad and great granddad. He will be sadly missed by many people xxx.”

Tributes came flooding in on Facebook.

David Preston said: “R.I.P Granddad John, it was such a pleasure meeting you in Rhyl, a true gentleman and a proud man. Memories I cherish forever. So Sorry for your loss.”

Mandy Griffin added: “Sorry to here your sad news xxx.”

Daniel Webb described Mr Neill as an “amazing singer.”

The duo had been raising money for cancer charities prior to his death.
