A TOWN centre leisure centre closed for structural damage is due to re-open later this week.

St James’ Leisure Centre in Waterdale was closed last week while asseors carried out checks on the building which dates from the 1930s after part of the roof collapsed.

Now part of the building is scheduled to re-open on Wednesday - although the Turkish baths will stay shut and there will be alterations for gym users and swimmers too.

Michael Hart, chief executive of DCLT, which runs the building said: “It is our intention to open St James Leisure Centre on Wednesday subject to written confirmation from our external assessors.

“The safety of our staff and customers is our number one priority and while we are committed to reopening the centre as soon as possible we felt it was necessary to get expert opinion to say it was safe to do so.

“We hope to re open the building on Wednesday April 17 with a reduced gym offering and changes to the changing facility arrangements.

“The Turkish baths will remain closed until further notice and there will be some minor tweaks to the swimming session programme which we will post on our website as soon as they are confirmed.”
