Scores of new jobs are set to be created at Doncaster’s huge Amazon depot.
The internet retail giant has revealed that it will create 1,000 permanent roles at its UK fulfilment centres in the coming months – including the one in Water Vole Way at Lakeside.
There are currently 6,000 permanent employees working in Amazon fulfilment and customer service centres across the UK.
The company said it was unable to state how many of the jobs would be based in Doncaster, but that the posts would be permanent and the moves would benefit Doncaster workers.
John Tagaway, director of UK operations at Amazon, said: “Over the past two years, we have added well in excess of 2,000 new employees to our workforce and we are delighted to be able to add a further 1,000 to that number over the coming months.
“We have continued to focus, day in, day out, on providing the very best shopping experience for our customers and, as we see greater demand, we are able to rapidly grow our talented team across the UK.”
Amazon has invested over £1 billion to date in its UK operations which include eight large fulfilment centres, including the Doncaster base.
The firm is gearing up for its busiest period of the year with thousands of Christmas deliveries set to be shipped out from the huge depot over the coming months, and in previous years the firm has taken on temporary staff to cope with the demand in the run-up to the festive season which peaks for shopping in early December.
Amazon has eight delivery centres, in Doncaster, Dunfermline, Gourock, Hemel Hempstead, Milton Keynes, Peterborough, Rugeley and Swansea Bay.
Amazon.com opened on the worldwide web in July 1995 and has since gone on to become one of the globe’s biggest retailers, shipping everything from CDs and books to garden furniture, toys and electrical equipment as well as branching into technology with the creation of its Kindle ebooks which have helped to revolutionise the digital reading market.
The firm’s sprawling Doncaster warehouse covers an area the size of more than six football pitches.
