YOUNG people in Swinton showed off their creative talents by painting a huge mural which paid tribute to the town’s rich heritage.

A group of more than 60 teenagers spent several months turning blank brick walls on Calladine Way into a flowing mural of colour.

Their creation featured images which represented Swinton’s past and present.

This included a pottery scene to reflect the former Rockingham Pottery Yard, a pitman to represent the area’s coal mines and a speeding train to mark the town’s interchange.

The youngsters were helped by a team of professional artists from Barnsley who provided materials and gave them a guiding hand.

They were rewarded with a day of celebration earlier this month with music and refreshments at the site.

Swinton councillor Ken Wyatt marked the occasion by cutting a ribbon to officially open the mural.

He said: “It is a remarkable achievement and the mural looks absolutely stunning. It’s the biggest I’ve ever seen!

“It is great that they have given it a local touch by featuring things that are specific to Swinton. The young people involved with the project should be very proud of themselves, they did an excellent job.”
