BUDDING Michael Schumachers are getting a taste of life in the fast lane as part of a college project to build racing vehicles.

Students at Dearne Valley College are busy constructing two racing buggies, one of which will be sold, with the other set to be entered into a race competition later this year.

The project is part of a newly launched motor sports course in which 17 pupils work hands-on with industry experts to get their vehicles out of the garage and onto the racing circuit.

Students have been working tirelessly on the vehicles’ engine, suspension, brakes, steering and chassis at a specially designed workshop at the Manvers-based college.

Tutor Darren Whitworth, 41, of Wath, said: “It has been a great project, all of the students are working so hard and we are getting some great results.

“We started the engines of one of the buggies for the first time last week which was a great milestone for the whole group. There were a lot of smiling faces when the engine started.”

The parts for the vehicles have been provided by Rotherham-based motoring firm MK Engineering.

The students hope to enter one of the buggies into the 2013 F600 Championship, which starts in the spring.

Mr Whitworth added: “The students are very enthusiastic and we are trying to teach them all aspects of motor sport, which will give them a good footing if they decide to have a career in the industry.”
