TWO young authors are celebrating after their short stories were published in two books.

Eloise Unerman, 12, and Sarah Bush, 15, of Wath Saint Pius X Catholic High School had their stories chosen to be featured in books which have been placed in schools across the North East of England.

Eloise proved the pen is mightier than the sword by writing about a shipwreck for inclusion in ‘Mini Sagas - Swashbuckling Stories’.

Writing from the perspective of a pirate marooned on an island, she wrote: “Images of a shipwreck crept into my mind, serving as a haunting reminder of what had happened.”

Sarah’s story described a trip to Paris which was featured in Around the World in 80 Words.

In ‘A Wonderful Memory’, she described: “Wonderingly, I stood in a daze at the top of the 320m tall Eiffel Tower, looking down at the blissful views of the stunning city.”

The two girls were chosen from hundreds of entrants across the North East in a competition run by the Young Writers group.

Linda Marsden, head of English, said: “We are very proud of them at the school. We offered some guidance but the majority of it was done off their own backs which was great to see.

“We have the two books in our library and I often see students reading them. The girls said how much they enjoyed the writing process and seeing their stories published at the end was a great reward.”
