Work on waste unit to begin

PREPARATION for the new Manvers waste unit starts this month, prior to the main building programme that will begin early next year.

3SE (a partnership between Shanks Group plc and SSE (Scottish and Southern Energy plc), will run the facility that will be able to process 265,000 tonnes of waste each year.

The intake will be largely household waste from the three boroughs of Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham, but will also include some commercial waste.

The three councils secured £77m through the Private Finance Initiative for the scheme and planning permission was given earlier this year for it to go ahead.

Work on a new access bridge in to the site begins on Monday, necessitating the closure of 700 metres of a public bridleway for six months, and possibly longer.

Then the build is expected to be completed in 2014 for the plant to become fully operational the following year.

Up to 40 jobs will be created at the facility, to be run by Shanks over a contracted period of 25 years.

A Community Liaison Group has been set up to allow regular communications between local people and the project team.

The 15-strong group is made up of members of the public who expressed interest in the scheme, and local councillors, with meetings attended by the BDR Contract Manager and representatives of 3SE.

One of the main concerns of people living near to the site or close to the routes to be used by waste lorries is the amount of increased traffic on congested local roads.

Anyone with issues they would like to raise should contact the chairman of the Community Liaison Group, David Packham, at david.packham@talk21.com
