Waste site consultation
REGIONAL waste management bosses have identified 13 sites in Doncaster that could potentially host a giant incinerator, it has emerged.
Sites at Wheatley Hall Road, Redhouse Interchange and Carcroft Industrial Estate, as well as quarries at Armthorpe, Warmsworth and Cadeby have all been shortlisted as possible locations for state-of-the-art waste treatment and recovery facilities.
Sandall Stones Road in Kirk Sandall, Planet Road at Carcroft Common, Capitol Park, Hungerhill Business Park in Edenthorpe, Bootham Lane Landfill and two sites at Hatfield Power Park make up the list currently being considered by local authority officers.
Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham (BDR) councils have joined forces to
produce the Development Plan Document (DPD) - a paper currently out for public consultation.
The region faces the challenge of managing 611,000 tonnes of municipal, commercial and industrial waste per year by 2020, according to figures set out in the Yorkshire and Humber Plan.
A total of 231,000 tonnes per year will need to be recycled or composted to meet government targets.
New waste management sites, needed to plug a shortfall of facilities across the region and reduce the amount of rubbish sent to landfill, will provide the latest equipment for recycling and either the physical, chemical or biological treatment of waste.
Other sites will concentrate on composting or generating energy from waste products - including incineration, a process which relies on elaborate systems to clean up a wide range of harmful gases before they are released into the atmosphere.
According to the DPD Wheatley Hall Road scores in the Doncaster area highest on a site suitability test, followed by Armthorpe Quarry and Capitol Park. Thurnscoe Business Park has emerged as the most suitable site across the area.
A list of 39 possible sites in Doncaster was originally drawn up by officers before being whittled down to 13 following the first phase of consultation.
Sites at Robin Hood Airport, Lakeside, Thorpe Marsh and the Waterfront at Wheatley are among those to have been ditched.
All shortlisted sites will be subject to strict planning procedures before any schemes are given the go-ahead.
The DPD can be viewed at www.doncaster.gov.uk/wastedpd. Copies can also be accessed at Doncaster Library and Mansion House.
A drop-in session will be held at Doncaster Trades and Labour Club in the Frenchgate Centre on November 22 from 10am to 4pm. The same venue will host a workshop on November 26 from 6pm to 8pm.
The public consultation will run until Friday, December 12.
