Wake up to the jobs crisis and help our young people, blasts MP

Michael Dugher, the Member of Parliament for Barnsley East, has accused Ministers of abandoning the needs of South Yorkshire’s young people.

New figures released by the Office for National Statistics reveal that the number of 18 to 24 year olds in South Yorkshire who have been unemployed for more than twelve months has risen by a massive 199 per cent in the last year.

The new figures also show the overall level of youth unemployment in South Yorkshire to be 15,000 - a 13 per cent increase over the last 12 months.

And the total number of people claiming Job Seekers Allowance (JSA) in South Yorkshire has also risen sharply to stand at 45,240 – a 12 per cent increase over 12 months.

Mr Dugher, said: “Youth unemployment in South Yorkshire keeps on rising yet the Government still refuses to take the necessary action. Ministers just don’t seem to care about what is happening here in South Yorkshire.

“There are many things that Ministers could do to help, such as introducing a tax on bankers’ bonuses to fund 100,000 youth jobs and a tax break for small firms taking on extra workers to help get Britain back to work.”

Mr Dugher favours a “Real Jobs Guarantee” scheme for young people, with six-month paid placements, preferably in the private sector, for all 18-24 year olds who have been unemployed for more than twelve months.

“Ministers need to wake up to the jobs crisis and take urgent action,” added the MP.
