Verdict on Man Found Hanged Over Leger Way
A YOUNG schizophrenic may not have killed himself had he not smoked cannabis as a child, Doncaster's coroner has claimed.
The body of Stuart Lester was discovered hanging from a footbridge over Leger Way by a motorist in the early hours of February 26 earlier this year.
The 21-year-old, who was diagnosed as a schizophrenic at the age of 17 and according to his mother heard voices in his head, took five ecstasy tablets the night before his death, an inquest heard this week.
According to Doncaster Royal Infirmary's consultant pathologist Dr George Kurian, who conducted a post mortem examination, the supermarket shelf-stacker's paranoid condition was brought on by cannabis use as a child.
Coroner Stanley Hooper recorded a verdict that Mr Lester, of Essex Avenue, Intake, killed himself.
"It may be thought that this may not have happened if this unfortunate young man had not used cannabis as a child," he said.
The debate over whether cannabis should be upgraded from a Class C to a Class B drug was again thrown into the media spotlight last week after senior police officials called for a reclassification.
