A TRIO of young cooks have come out on top with their tasty treat.

The Sky High Pie created by the team from Edlignton Hill Top Primary School tickled the taste buds of judges in the annual schools technology challenge competition.

The creation - party sausages, rump steak, onions and peas topped with shortcrust pastry - took the top award in the Edlington pyramid heat that saw the secondary and primary schools link up with well-known Doncaster firm Toppings Pies.

The team - Abigail Newsome, Chloe Jones and Tyra Devaney - were given a tour of the bakery and helped to manufacture their own recipe pie with support from Maggie Topping.

The company challenged the six schools to create a hot eating savoury pie, name it and present a plan as to how it would be marketed. Lynda Povey, general manager at Toppings said: "The school children really raised the bar this year on taste, quality and standard of marketing materials. It was a very difficult decision, but the Hill Top Primary school entry was top crust."

Runner ups up - with identical marks - were Edlington Victoria Primary School and Edlington School.

Mary Milburn of organisers Business and Education South Yorkshire explained: "The purpose of this Technology Challenge is to stimulate students to think about the food manufacturing process. The success of the project is down to the companies who set the challenges as they work closely with the schools during the project. By working with The Topping Pie Company, the students have been able to gain a real insight into the world of food production, the technology involved and the thought processes that goes into designing, packaging and marketing food products."

This year's Doncaster Technology Challenge was the largest to date, involving 27 businesses, more than schools and 3,500 pupils aged between ten and 16 years.
