Train ticket office saved from closure

A TRAIN station ticket office has been spared from closure as part of a national cost cutting exercise.

As revealed in the Free Press in April, Thorne North Station was one of more than 600 smaller stations at risk of seeing ticket offices closed and replaced by automated machines.

But following meetings between transport ministers, Northern Rail and Don Valley MP Caroline Flint the office will remain open for the foreseeable future.

Ms Flint said: “Thorne North is a very popular station, which has good parking, CCTV and helpful station staff.

“The next step is to improve the access to one platform where passengers have to use a stair bridge or steep steps to access.

“That is clearly not in the interests of passengers who are elderly, disabled or with children in buggies – so we are looking at a number of options to make the most of a really valued local station.”

The original proposal was part of the Government-commissioned McNulty report.

When the closures were revealed through a leaked Government document, Northern Rail which run the station, denied it had plans to shut the ticket office at Thorne, but said it was looking at the way people bought their tickets to make improvements to their service in the future.

Ms Flint visited the train station with Northern Rail client stakeholder manager, Stuart Rands to discuss the access difficulties for passengers travelling east, because only one platform has a ramp for easy access.
