Supporting carers

MANY carers are unhappy at the Government's ten-year Carers' Strategy, as the pledges to review current structure of benefits don't go far enough. Carers need change sooner rather than later and are planning to speak out in a 'Carers Poverty Protest.'

We at Doncaster Partnership for Carers are running a petition and are urging carers and other supprters to write to their MPs and to raise awareness of the lack of commitment to address the financial hardship caused by caring for someone.

There is a protest in London on April 22 for which we may have gained funding for transport, should we receive enough support from people wanting to go. Anyone wishing to support us either collecting signatures for the petition or going to the protest can contact Debbie Osborne on (01302) 531333 at Doncaster Partnership for Carers or visit website: www.carerspovertyprotest.myfreeforum.org

I would also like to bring to carers' attention the 2009 Carers Week survey - 'Hidden and Invisible?', produced by the organisation CarersUK.

It's to be completed online at www.carersweeksurvey.org.uk The survey will identify the issues most important to carers, and will give the opportunity to share their experience of caring.

The stories will create a picture and set of results, which will be at the centre of Carers Week 2009. All information provided by carers will be private and confidential.

Let's not forget the support and information we give to adult carers by telephone or through home visits. If you would like some help please contact us on (01302) 531333.
