Support for Doncaster's own university

LOCAL MP Ed Miliband has launched an online poll to guage support for a university in Doncaster.

The Doncaster North parliamentary representative is asking visitors to his website to vote on whether they are behind a bid for Doncaster College to become an independent University of Doncaster.

College bosses are seeking the opportunity to award their own degrees within three years and have an independent university in the town within seven years.

The poll poses the question: 'Do you support a bid for university status for Doncaster College?' and voters have the option of voting 'yes', 'no' or 'don't know'. Over 750 votes have already been cast.

Mr Miliband, who is also energy secretary, wants to see more opportunities for people in his constituency to gain access to further and higher education.

He said: "There is huge talent in Doncaster and like other major towns and cities, it is right to ask whether it is time now to have a university to provide greater higher education opportunities, building on the work of Doncaster College.

"Despite the current economic difficulties, we know that getting the right skills - from an apprenticeship to an academic degree - is the best route to earning more. I urge people to respond to my newsletter and let me know their views."

Welcoming the poll, a college spokesman added: "We know our higher education provision is good already, but we want to give the people of Doncaster a proper university to shout about - something different than that in South Yorkshire already."

This year more students than ever have enrolled on courses at the college's University Centre - the banner under which higher education courses are run. Learner figures are up by more than ten per cent and more local students are deciding to study locally - 337 new Doncaster students have signed up to study at the centre and 452 Doncastrians are returning.

Anyone who wants to take part should log on to www.edmilibandmp.com or send back a freepost reply slip on the MP's annual parliamentary report being delivered to area homes during November. The result is expected to be announced early next year.
