Students get free gifts for new course

STUDENTS could get a free laptop or driving lessons just for enrolling on a new course at Doncaster College.

Youngsters aged 16-19 not currently studying or in full-time employment may be eligible for the new Fresh Start course being delivered at The Hub.

Principal Rowland Foote promised incentives when he took over at the helm of the college three months ago.

Students would study on various short courses for 15 weeks, covering subjects such as hair and beauty, floristry, animal care, childcare, performing arts, creative arts, hospitality and catering IT, travel and tourism, construction, technology and much more.

If the students then enrol and stay on a mainstream course at Doncaster College on completion, they will be given either a free laptop or free driving lessons.

Mr Foote said: "This course is a perfect stepping stone for those students who want to get back into education and work towards a career.

"It could lead on to many other mainstream college courses and apprenticeship programmes – and of course there's a great incentive for these teenagers to get back into the learning world and make something of themselves."

Mr Foote, previously principal at Bournemouth and Poole College, became known there for giving out high-tech gadgets and driving lessons as incentives to attract directionless youngsters not in education, jobs or training, back to learning.

He pledged to run a similar initiative in Doncaster and said he would ask industry to sponsor items in exchange for advertising

The project kicked off with an open day at The Hub attended by dozens of youngsters.
