STAFF at Dearne Valley College put secondary school pupils through their paces during a sports taster day.

Year ten pupils from Rawmarsh Community School spent an afternoon at the Wath-based college as part of DVC’s School Liaison Service, which is committed to raising awareness of further education opportunities available after completing compulsory education.

The group got the chance to look around the facilities, speak to tutors and play a few sports.

Matt Boucher, assistant headteacher at Rawmarsh Community School, said: “We received a very warm welcome from the tutor, and the facilities at DVC are clearly excellent.

“Our students really enjoyed a flavour of college life at DVC and were enthused to want to know more.

“Our strong links to the college help the young people of Rawmarsh to make that, sometimes difficult, first step away from school and aspire to continue to achieve in education and training.”

Michael Blythe, a sport and physical recreation tutor at the college, added: “The group who attended were all excellent. They were polite, enthusiastic, hard working, and did everything with a smile on their face.

“Upon leaving they should have also developed the knowledge and skills needed to lead their own practical sports sessions should they return to DVC on a sports course.

“Apart from this, students also had opportunity to meet staff, observe classes, use the facilities and gain an insight into college life.

“Hopefully more of these taster sessions can be done so other students can reap the same benefits and DVC has the chance to spread word of the good work we do.”
