Giant inflatable lungs will be on display at Barnsley.

some giant lungs will stop shoppers in their tracks, in a bid to alert them to the signs of lung cancer.

A pair of 12 feet-high inflatable lungs will be on show in Barnsley town centre on Wednesday.

The eye-catching ‘Mega lungs’ will be outside Poundland from 9am to 4.30pm, alongside Barnsley’s mobile cancer information service and lung cancer nurse specialists from the hospital.

The event has been arranged to help raise awareness of the common signs and symptoms of lung cancer and improve early diagnosis of the disease.....there have been 495 new cases diagnosed across the Dearne and Barnsley in the last three years.

Katie Hopkins, Cancer Information Manager in Barnsley said: “Not many people know that having a cough for three weeks or more can be a sign of lung cancer, even though lung cancer is the biggest cancer killer.

“That is why awareness raising events like this are so important – the more people diagnosed earlier, the higher the chance of receiving treatment and the more lives that can be saved.

The main signs and symptoms of lung cancer are: A cough that doesn’t go away after two or three weeks, a worsening or change to a long-standing cough, repeated chest infections, coughing up blood, unexplained persistent breathlessness, tiredness, persistent weight loss or chest and/or shoulder pain.

People who are worried about such symptoms should visit their GP. The mega-lungs are to be supplied by Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation.
