Special lecture about high observation beds at Scunthorpe Hospital

AN INSIGHT into specialist High Observation Beds (HOBS) for surgical patients will be provided at a special lecture being held next week.

HOBS is based on Ward 28 at Scunthorpe hospital and provides care for patients requiring a higher level of observation post operatively meaning they can stay on a general ward without the need to be admitted to either the Intensive Care Unit or High Dependency Unit.

The speakers will be Consultant Anaesthetist Dr Jerry Thomas and Consultant Colorectal Surgeon Miss Geeta Kaur, who were instrumental in establishing the unit.

The event is being held for Members of Northern Lincolnshire and Goole Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust on Monday, September 17th, at 5.30pm, in the Lecture Hall, Butterwick House, Scunthorpe General Hospital.

Dr Thomas said: “Patients undergoing major surgical procedures often require more frequent observations and clinical interventions which cannot be done on a general ward. This has meant them being admitted to the Intensive Care Unit.”
Miss Kaur said: “With the opening of the High Observation Beds facility these patients can now be managed on Ward 28. Patients are continuously assessed to ensure they can be cared for appropriately in HOBS and once they are suitable for discharge they go to a general ward for continued care.”

The lecture is free and open to everyone to attend, although Trust members will be given priority.
