SLIDESHOW: Do YOU know graffiti gang?
A GRAFFITI gang caused widespread damage to homes and public buildings during an overnight vandalism spree.
Yobs used silver spray paint cans to scrawl ‘personal tags’ and offensive language on a number of properties in the Fitzwilliam Street area of Swinton.
Police said there were six reports of criminal damage to vehicles and buildings overnight.
Officers believe it was the work of more than one person as different tags - a nickname for a graffiti artist’s ‘signature’ - had been sprayed at about a dozen different locations.
They are now appealing for the public to come forward and help identify those responsible.
PC Fraser Garner, of the Wath Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: “Any form of anti-social behaviour, including vandalism and criminal damage, can have an impact on how safe and secure people feel.
“This unusual amount of graffiti occurred over one night and has caused distress to the property owners.
“Further graffiti was discovered at other locations. However, this was not reported to the police, as residents were able to remove it.
“We are looking for the public’s help in identifying these graffiti tags to help reassure residents that Swinton is a safe place to live and work.”
The vandalism took place between Tuesday, January 8, and Wednesday, January 9, but police only released details of the crimes this week.
If anyone has information relating to the identity of the people responsible for these graffiti tags, please call South Yorkshire Police on 101 and quote reference number 233 of January 9, 2013.
