SHOPPERS' PARADISE AS 'PRADAMARK' OPENS

IT will be a case of cheap as chic in Doncaster today - when the brand new bigger and better Primark opens its doors to hoardes of fashion-conscious bargain hunters.

The massive 54,000 sq ft store in the Market Place will be a paradise for shoppers after the latest trends at prices from days gone by.

It is hoped that Pradamark - as the shop is nicknamed by its ever increasing fan base - will also boost trade at the market end of town, which has seen a slump the opening of the new Frenchgate Centre in June.

The new store's size, which is spread over three storeys, makes it one of the town's biggest stores after Debenhams which covers more than 100,000 sq ft.

Although the company won't reveal how much they have invested in the new store - the former Littlewoods - it has already provided a boost to the local economy - employing 283 staff, 180 more than in the old store in St Sepulchre Gate.

Clive Armitage, area manager of Primark covering the North East, said: "It's a bigger, brighter new store that's going to be really good for Doncaster.

"We are now able to give a bigger range of stock and a much better shopping experience. Because of this we are able to show Doncaster what Primark is all about."

Market trader and borough councillor Mick Maye said the move represented a brave and wise venture for the store: "It just goes to show that not everybody has got to go running to the Frenchgate Centre.

"They know that the market attracts more people and they are going to get these people walking past their doors, and I am sure that it will also pull people into the area and help the market.

"It's nice to see a firm investing in this area - it's a brave decision and a good decision."

Mayor Martin Winter said: "It looks a fantastic new store and can only be good news for our market as it will draw more shoppers into the area. Along with the new Lime store, It shows that development is happening all over the town centre - not just in and around the Frenchgate interchange.

"The new plans for the wool market, soon to be submitted to planning, will also add to the attraction of our historic market "

So what can Doncaster's fashion followers expect from the new store? Free Press women's page editor and fashion writer Sarah Dunn had a sneak preview this week. She said: "There are chunky knits and faux fur shrugs; puffball skirts and tartan minis; skinny fit jeans and stretchy black leggings - and as much grey and mustard as you can handle. With an accessories department offering beads, bags and belts in every colour to match, along with an extensive lingerie and shoe department, there really is no part of an outfit that you must go without - why would you, when the prices are kept so low?

"And it's not just for trendy teenage girls. There's men's and kids' departments, as well as homeware, and though a lot of the ladies' fashions could be classed as high fashion restricted to a younger clientele, there are plenty of items for all ages and sizes."
