Rifles Get Freedom of Doncaster
CROWDS gathered to watch all the pomp and ceremony as Doncaster bestowed its highest honour to acknowledge a military unit's historic connections to the town.
The Rifles Regiment - created in February through the amalgamation of several local regiments including the Light Infantry, formerly the Kings Own Light Infantry - paraded through the streets after being granted the Freedom of the Borough on Saturday.
The honour had been bestowed on the KOYLI just after the war and civic leaders were keen to transfer the honour to the new regiment.
Chairman of Doncaster Council Coun Tony Sockett said: "Fredom of Entry is the highest honour that a council can give a military unit and this is a momentous occasion for the Rifle Regiment and for the borough."
The last Freedom of Entry was given to RAF Finningley - now the site of Robin Hood Airport - in October 1975.
