Preparations well under way for the winter
NORTH Lincolnshire Council claims it is ready for winter with gritters and salt - and for the first time, it will use knapsack sprayers in difficult areas.
From the end of this month, the gritting season starts and officers will be on standby until the end of March next year, the public is assured.
For the past month or so, officers have tested routes. All drivers are trained to accredited national standards and have undergone route familiarisation sessions.
The council has worked in partnership with town and parish councils and has replenished their local supplies of salt with extra salt bins in some locations.
During extreme bad weather, the council recruits local farmers and contractors to use tractors with snow ploughs and other vehicles to help clear the snow, and has a register of those who can be called on at short notice.
The quad bike and de-icing spray unit that the council operated last year in pedestrianised areas will be used again. Knapsack sprayers will be used to treat areas such as footbridges.
Coun Nigel Sherwood, cabinet member for Highways and Neighbourhood at North Lincolnshire Council, said: “The service team is fully prepared for the return of the winter weather. We have put everything in place during the summer. One thing we cannot do is predict the weather, but at least we are ready.
“We have the latest technology and equipment to respond and officers will work 24/7 to ensure the main roads are kept clear.”
He continued: “I want to thank all those who have come forward and offered to help the council during difficult conditions. Their help and support is much appreciated.”
