Police urge children ‘don’t talk to strangers’
POLICE are urging parents to hammer home the “stranger danger” message to children following the attempt abduction of a seven-year-old girl in Hexthorpe earlier this month.
But officers leading the case reassured residents that this was an isolated incident.
The attempt abduction happened at around 5.30pm on September 21 when the girl was approached by an unknown man who asked her to get into his car, which was parked across the road on Mutual Street.
The girl refused and ran to her house and went inside. The man is believed to have followed her and stood outside the house for a short time.
Detective Inspector Rick Partridge said: “We are literally working overtime to get this resolved.
“It’s an isolated incident, it really is, we’ve not had any other incidents of this type in that area.
“Offences are few and far between but we need to raise people’s awareness. These things do happen, although rare in Doncaster.”
He added: “Parents need to make children aware and hammer home the dangers some people can pose.
“Don’t talk to strangers, if people come up to you then tell your parents. If these people are doing nothing wrong then nothing will happen to them. You shouldn’t be scared to report things.
“We are pretty pleased how the investigation is going.”
A man from Sheffield has been arrested and bailed pending further police inquiries. Anyone with any more information is asked to contact police on 101, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111, quoting incident number 927 of September 21.
