Plans for city centre living unveiled
CITY centre living is set to come to Doncaster as part of ambitious plans to transform a former working men's club into apartments.
Developers NuGas has announced plans for its 8 million Northern Lights development which would see 79 eco-friendly apartments and a 6,000sq ft of offices built in two blocks near the town centre.
The scheme complete with five wind turbines on the roof to supply electricity will replace the former Mainline Working Men's Club in North Bridge Road.
At 64,000sq ft development will be nearly double the size of anything NuGas has ever built before.
Leigh Kirk, contract manager said: "It is the biggest thing we will have built to date. Before then I think we've done something which was 35,000sq ft so it is a big step - but this will be a great project.
"We looked at regeneration in the area and what parts of Doncaster would benefit from this type of development. We came across North Bridge Road and found the location ideal as it is five minutes away from the college and town centre."
A planning application will be discussed by Doncaster Council and the developers hope to be on site early next year.
If successful 79 modern one and two bedroom flats will be built as well as 48 underground parking spaces.
Developers say the apartments, costing between 90,000 and 150,000, will feature full height glass walls giving panoramic views of the borough.
Other features will include an eco-friendly air system to help reduce energy costs.
NuGas said a decision for it to occupy the office space or let it out would be made when the development was built.
Barnsley-based NuGas has previously worked on apartments in Sheffield including Cutlers Court.
Coda Studios, based in Sheffield are the architects of the plans.
Director David Cross said: "This is a unique development that will spearhead the redevelopment of the North Bridge area.
"This is an area that we believe has the potential to become an urban village akin to those in Sheffield and will become the new benchmark for city living in the region.
"It is ideally located to become a 'city island' with fantastic links to the town centre.
"The open plan designed apartments are bursting with eco-features and with full height glass walls this is an almost unprecedented development in South Yorkshire."
