Parking and taxes set to be frozen as mayor Peter Davies’ budget passes latest phase

FREEZES to parking charges, school meals and council tax have been backed by Doncaster Council’s cabinet.
The committee today approved mayor Peter Davies’ budget plans, which includes scrapping controversial plans to impose a four per cent pay cut for the authority’s lowest paid staff.
Mr Davies said his main aim of the budget was to be cost effective, protect the pay of the council’s lowest paid staff and provide quality services for the most vulnerable residents.
He told the meeting: “I have listened to the concerns of staff and previous proposals failed to protect the lowest paid at this difficult time.
“It is important we are less costly and ensure tax payers’ hard-earned money is spent on frontline services for Doncaster.”
Under his new plan Mr Davies says £1.7 million of savings will be made by improving recycling and waste disposal services, £7.7 million will come through changes to the procurement system and £6.2 million will be cut by changes to staff terms. The plans aim to recoup almost £30 of government imposed funding cuts over the next year.
Under the new pay cut structure 1,300 council staff will not face pay cuts, 2,500 will face a 2.5 per cent cut and the 2,300 staff with salaries over £20,000 will face a 2.5 per cent cut.
The budget will be discussed by the full council at the Mansion House on February 23.
