IT was a poignant day as relatives and family of a Doncaster murder victim came together to raise cash for his partner and daughter.
About 100 people took part in a walk in memory of 25-year-old Karl Smith who died following an altercation at The Drum pub in Bentley.
Devastated close friend Lee Ingber, 29, was thrilled that so many people from the community pulled together to help Mr Smith’s little daughter, Nakiah, and partner, Andrena.
Walkers met up at Sheffield’s Meadowhall shopping centre and trekked the gruelling 17 miles to the Frenchgate Centre in Doncaster.
Lee, of Stonehill Rise in Scawthorpe, said: “It was a brilliant day. It was fantastic to see so many people come out in his memory. He was the nicest guy you could ever meet and he had many friends in the Doncaster area.
“Seeing everyone come together certainly fetched a tear to the eyes of some of Karl’s friends and family.”
Sponsor money for the event is still being collected and counted but anyone who would like to donate can still call Lee on 01302 786417.
He added: “It was such a success that we’re planning to make it an annual event.”
A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said they are still awaiting the results of further post-mortem examinations before they can release his body for a funeral.
A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “It is likely to be another few weeks before we have a definitive from the further tests. We’ve had a good response for information from the public.”
Mr Smith, of Broughton Avenue in Bentley, died at Doncaster Royal Infirmary on August 26.
An 18-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder and released on police bail.
